With over 20 years of experience in adult education, Filtod Walker is a secular instructor and chaplain who runs a small mindfulness group in New Orleans, LA. He is a master teacher who specializes in teaching mindfulness, slow living, communication, nature meditation, and couples and self-connection day retreats and classes. Filtod wrote his master's thesis on how to teach emotional intelligence in the classroom setting and has been a Vipassana (Insight) meditation practitioner since 1997. Formally in the mindfulness field since 2012, he completed his teacher training and practicum working within the correctional system, created a neighborhood mindfulness initiative, and also completed a year-long hospital chaplain residency where he provided grief support, peer counseling, and crisis intervention during COVID.
Prior to becoming a mindfulness teacher, Filtod was a hospice peer support counselor during the AIDS crisis, provided helpline support for the LGBTQ community and runaway youth, worked on the team that brought the first LGBTQ self-defense classes to Chicago, and also taught extensively in adult literacy and English acquisition education. For seven years, he conducted youth prison worker training, teacher improvement workshops, ran emotional intelligence classes, and worked as a consultant with area non-profits. On the lighter side, he created a banned book club, an LGBTQ history group, and an artist salon group that were well-attended for many years.
When he isn't working, Filtod enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, enjoying the local festivals, and reading mysteries.
